Latest News
- Fukushima and Social Media. Anti-nuclear political action groups have been using social media to promote all kinds of outrageous claims about the conditions at the plant, releases to the environment, and anticipated health effects. Scammers, such as the one exposed by the Wall Street Journal (see below), follow close behind. For factual information about Fukushima, the ANS Nuclear Cafe has a summary page of articles from all reputable media and professional sources. This is the best source for factual data and analysis.
- Wall Street Journal exposes a radiation scam. A consumer scam where victims submit strands of hair for a "magic" test that determines their exposure to radioactive materials was exposed by the WSJ in the April 6, 2012 edition of the paper. This scam is prevalent in the US as well as Japan. Don't get scammed! The article and a video report are avialable in the online version of the paper.
- Dr. Metzger's presentation for the Methods of Analytical Radiochemistry meeting in March, entitled "The Case for Fractional Solubility Profiles", is available here. The paper should follow shortly.
- The most thorough report on the Fukushima Daiichi accident was released on March 8th by the American Nuclear Society. The link to the report is here.
- Dr. Metzger is teaching Health Physics Principles (EEE498, EEE511) at ASU for the Spring, 2012 Semester. The course syllabus is available.

- Radiation Doses in Japan: A nice Bloomberg article that compares the doses in Japan to other areas. This is a good handout for travelers going to Japan.
The Airport Radiation Backscatter Machines
- The radiation dose delivered from the airport backscatter x-ray units installed at security checkpoints is a subject of some controversy. An a priori investigation of these doses is now available in an article published in Radiation Protection and Dosimetry by Peter Rez and Ken Mossman from ASU, and Bob Metzger from RSE. The link to the paper is: http://rpd.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2010/11/09/rpd.ncq358.full
- Additional information on the backscatter units with a nice list of references can be obtained from the FDA website on the subject.
