NRC Information Notice 2011-09
The NRC issued an information notice on shutter failures of fixed gauges used in harse environments. The notice requests users of such gauges to check the function of the shutter mechanisms more frequently. As discussed in all of our training courses, shutter mechanisms on these gauges should never be trusted. Shutters should always be checked by using a geiger counter on the receiver side of the gauge to determine the position of the shutter. These shutter checks should be performed as part of the closed space entry procedure for any bin or hopper where a fixed gauge is mounted, and before a gauge is moved for any reason.
